Dentists, as well as lab technicians within the dental laboratory, are the artists behind the creation of dental prostheses. The process of fabricating dental prosthetics is intricate and detailed, involving microscopic work with a variety of materials. Dental prosthetics have always been in high demand. The accuracy and quality of these prostheses play a major role in restoring the aesthetics and function of a patient’s teeth. Among the many innovations that have helped simplify the fabrication process, one of the most important is CAD-CAM technology.
CAD-CAM technology allows the construction of dental prostheses and prosthetic parts, such as crowns, dentures, and bridges, more simply and economically than the traditional method, resulting in products that are accurately adapted to the mouth of each patient.

CAD-CAM technology is a computer design and manufacturing system that has been used since the 1970s. It is a sophisticated system that facilitates the process of creating custom, high-quality prostheses that are accurately adapted to each patient and their teeth.
As its name suggests, this software is divided into two components. CAD, or computer-aided design, refers to the capture and design of the prosthetic piece. CAM, or computer-aided manufacturing, refers to the manufacturing process of the prosthesis by the milling machine. Using this combined method, dental professionals are able to construct ceramic crowns, mouthguards, implant bridges, dentures, and other prosthetic pieces in a simpler, faster, and more accurate way.

In the first phase, the CAD phase, the teeth are scanned directly from the patient’s mouth with a digital 3D camera. The file is then transmitted to the computer. From the captured images, a 3D virtual model is created, from which new prosthetic restorations are designed and then milled.
The scanning process of the patient’s mouth replaces the old, traditional method of taking putty molds of the patient’s mouth. These impressions were often uncomfortable, time-consuming, and messy. The process had to be done for the upper arch and the lower arch, and if there were distortions or deficiencies, the impressions had to be repeated. This is not the case with scanning. If the mouth is scanned correctly, there is rarely an issue, and if there are any discrepancies with the scanning or imaging process, the area can simply be scanned again.
The next step is choosing or determining how the final restoration of the teeth will look. The artificial intelligence software within the system has a library of several tooth designs that can serve as an initial base for the patient’s tooth restoration.
Successive analysis and adjustments then follow. Adjustments are made to the design of the tooth to be milled. These adjustments can change aspects such as dimensions, contour, and overall shape. In addition, the thickness and height needed for proper function are also considered in order to provide a comfortable bite and correct dental occlusion.
The last phase, the CAM phase, is the transformation of the virtual image produced by the CAD software into a real object. Through automated, high-precision cuts made by a milling machine using the chosen raw material, the system produces the final result customized for each patient.
CAD-CAM technology is capable of producing high-quality prosthetic solutions and can simplify the process for dentists and labs. However, it is still important to monitor all procedures carefully and control quality at each stage. The technique is highly accurate and dependable, reducing fabrication errors through digital technology.

Many types of materials can be used with this technology. CAD-CAM can facilitate the creation of acrylic dentures, zirconia ceramic crowns, gold crowns, implant crowns, and many other restorations. The milling units have become faster and more resilient while improving their overall accuracy. Prosthetics for teeth can now be sized to an accuracy of 10 microns, which is one hundredth of 1 millimeter. Milling technology is most commonly used in the fabrication of ceramic crowns, but it has now advanced to allow the fabrication of many kinds of prosthetics. These are some of the key advantages of CAD-CAM technology compared to traditional methods.

This is a technique that allows teeth to be created with great precision, avoiding many of the errors associated with manual work. However, if it becomes necessary to correct a detail, make design changes, or mill the same tooth restoration again, CAD-CAM has a major advantage compared to traditional methods. It allows you to do so without going through the entire process again from the beginning.

With this technology it is possible to save the project on the computer, along with the patient number and the identification of the dental technician who created the file. So if you need to adjust any details, remake the prosthetic, or simply review the file, you can open it and continue working from the original project. Once that phase is complete, it is possible to move back to CAM, transforming the digital document into a real object again with the milling machine.

In 2005, Dr. Bahram Mostaghaci and Dr. Bill Henry met while instructing students at Algonquin College’s advanced restorative hygiene program. Their instant chemistry and philosophy for providing patient-centric dentistry soon led to a professional partnership.
Together as partners they established Marchwood Dental on a beautiful property at the corner of Halton Terrace and March Road. The existing Richardson homestead on the property was completely redesigned in 2006, becoming what is now our showcase dental practice.
After a ten-year partnership, Dr. Mostaghaci became sole owner in 2016. Dr. Henry continued to work until his eventual retirement in 2025. We are lucky to have a highly caring and talented team of associate dentists who continue to implement our original vision and office philosophy. White resin fillings are used to repair teeth affected by decay, small fractures, chips, or worn enamel. Tooth enamel is strong, but it can still be damaged by sugar, acidic foods and drinks, grinding, nail-biting, or using teeth in ways they were not meant to be used.
White resin, also called composite resin, bonds directly to the tooth structure. This allows the dentist to repair smaller or shallower areas while preserving as much healthy tooth structure as possible.
Composite resin is available in a variety of shades, allowing the filling to be matched closely to the natural tooth colour. It is commonly used for conservative dental restorations where both function and appearance are important.

Oral cancer screening is an important part of routine dental care. During an exam, the dentist and dental hygienist look for unusual changes in the lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, and other areas of the mouth.
