HOW ARE DENTURES MADE IN ACRYLIC?
Depending on each case and the patients’ expectations, some treatment options for the replacement of teeth can be made in acrylic. Different treatments require different procedures, with a great deal of detailed, meticulous manual work associated with each. Now, let’s see how acrylic prosthetics are produced:
WHAT TYPES OF PROSTHETICS CAN BE PRODUCED?

The dental laboratory is the key department responsible for the manufacture of each acrylic prosthesis (denture or appliance for missing teeth) Labs all produce common prosthetics such as bridges, crowns, complete and partial removable dentures, but this section is mainly dedicated to the design and fabrication of implant-retained dentures or implant overdentures.
HYBRID PROSTHESES AND OVERDENTURES: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

Hybrid prostheses are fixed prosthetic solutions made of acrylic, and are fixated on titanium implants. In addition to being screwed in place, these prosthetic pieces also have a support bar, most commonly made of high-quality metal.
Traditional overdentures are removable prostheses (implant denture), that are fixated onto implants for stability. The difference is that these prosthetic appliances are removable by the patient. In such cases, the prostheses are fixated onto the implants via metal implant heads called locators, or via a metal bar that is permanently fixated onto the implants for additional support.

In the fabrication of all of these prostheses, the lab technician takes into account what the natural teeth of the patientlook like, as well as facial dimensions, facial complexion and the patient’s own specific cosmetic desires. From there, the acrylic teeth that make up the prosthetic appliance are created and arranged in detail. The setup of the final denture appliance is ultimately very personalized, resulting in a prosthetic with the ideal and desired shape and dimensions.
“The creation of an acrylic prosthesis requires rigorous and detailed work, involving many manual adjustments of the positions of the teeth.”
HOW IS QUALITY CHECKED?

When this process is finished, the prosthesis is subjected to strict levels of quality control. The appliance is initially manufactured in wax, so that it can be tried in and tested by the dentist and the patient. After this test, the wax prosthesis goes back to the laboratory and, depending on the feedback obtained, the technicians are able to correct minor deficiencies. From there, depending on the situation, the prosthesis may be sent again for testing or, if the work is finished and deemed ideal, it is processed into its final version in acrylic (instead of wax – dental implant).
The process can be variable depending on the case. Either way, the process involves rigorous and detailed work, involving many manual adjustments of the positions of the teeth. The placement of wax bars is routine in representing the patient’s gum on the denture. This wax is ultimately processed into acrylic to achieve the final product. Constant refinements are made during the whole process, with consistent checking of the quality of the occlusion (the patient’s bite. – loose dentures)
If you need to replace missing teeth, you now know more about the acrylic prosthesis manufacturing process in the laboratory, and everything that is done to guarantee its quality and custom fit to each patient’s mouth.
