In the second part of this ‘dental implant or dental bridge’ blog series, we will cover what dental implants are, their benefits, and what you can expect on the day of your surgery.

One of the main disadvantages of a dental bridge is the need to remove natural tooth structure on each tooth adjacent to the space in question. Dental implants on the other hand are independent of neighbouring teeth. The beauty of dental implants is that we are able to replace missing teeth without having to drill down neighboring teeth on either side!

What is a dental implant and crown?

WHAT IS A DENTAL IMPLANT AND CROWN?

The underlying structure of a natural tooth is more complicated than most people appreciate. When this structure — which includes bone, ligaments, and nerves — is removed, the site and neighbouring area slowly begin to deteriorate.

A dental implant replaces this structure with a metal post, one made of titanium. Within the span of a few months, new bone grows around the implanted metal. Once the new structure is tested by your dentist and declared secure enough, a crown is then screwed on top of the implant and sealed into place.

HOW DO DENTAL IMPLANTS AND CROWNS WORK?

After extracting the failing tooth, the gum tissue is moved aside, and with the use specialized instruments, space is created for the implant. The dental implant will fuse with your bone through a process known as osseointegration, creating a stable and secure foundation for a customized crown.

Once the implant base has healed effectively, a second stage is undertaken to fit a connector into the top of the dental implant. The dentist then positions and torques in the crown on top of this connector using a small screw. The attachment used to connect the crown to the implant is known as an abutment, precisely transitioning the attachment of the crown made of top-quality dental ceramic, to the implant. The crown will blend seamlessly with your natural tooth, ensuring that your smile is as aesthetic as it is functional.

DENTAL IMPLANT PROS AND CONS

Kanata implant crown advantages Almonte

One of the biggest advantages of dental implants is that they place absolutely no burden on the surrounding teeth and promote healing of bone structures and gums around the nearby teeth. They also tend to reduce long-term risks posed to the jaw. Another key factor that puts implants head and shoulders above bridges and dentures is that a high-quality dental implant is expected to last a lifetime. Dental implants replace the tooth roots, restoring more than 95 percent of bite strength, anchoring the replacement teeth firmly in the mouth. This is another key advantage unique to this treatment modality.

A disadvantage of dental implants is they can be a costly treatment. Especially in cases where a large number of individual teeth need to be replaced in different areas of the mouth. Even the replacement of a single tooth with an implant can be costly. But the advantages of implants far outweigh the cost, considering the cost of maintaining and ultimately replacing bridges and dentures many times over within a lifetime. When trying to replace a particularly large number of teeth, it is still advisable to go the implant route as opposed to a traditional dental bridge. The high up-front investment is ultimately worth it in the end. As they say in life, “you get what you pay for!”

Implant therapy tends to take longer and require multiple appointments to complete. It is deemed a surgical procedure, but the appointments are short. The ultimate high timeline with respect to implants is that there is a long waiting period of 3-5 months after the implant is placed and when the crown in completed. Based on its advantages and value, it’s worth the wait!

In our next article following this series, we will cover situations when an implant is recommended, and what to expect from the procedure. See you at the next article!
